What is Vanilla
Cured vanilla pods of Vanilla planifolia, cultivated and harvested from selected vanilla plants in Indonesia, known for their naturally sweet and authentic vanilla aroma with high vanillin content.
Vanilla is one of Indonesia’s most treasured spices, a jewel of the nation’s agricultural exports. The plant grows as a climbing vine that develops long green pods, which are harvested and cured to release their characteristic aroma. Although vanilla originally came from Mexico, it is now cultivated in major tropical regions—one of the largest being Indonesia, which produces Planifolia and Tahiti types recognized for their strong, natural fragrance. In Indonesia, vanilla beans typically reach maturity 6–9 months after pollination, with harvesting done individually once the pods turn from dark green to light green with a slight yellow hue, an indicator of full maturity. Harvest is not done all at once; farmers visit the vines several times a week because flowering and ripening occur gradually. For most producing regions, the main harvest season falls between May to August, depending on local climate and altitude.
